I never tire of this place. So many magical memories created here. I hope we have another Sunday Funday again someday, on the lawn like in the years past, when we would share locally grown food. It was days like that that inspired Ten Thousand Hours in Paradise, my upcoming book about how Hawaiian changed me. It’s a sort of love letter to the island, too — there are challenges, don’t get me wrong, but I feel very lucky to be able to live here. 🏝🥑🌺 #LuckyWeLiveHawaii
Wow, what a day. Despite flood warnings brought on by Hurricane Lane, over 300 people showed up on Saturday for the Made In Hawaii Film Festival!
I had the honor of being able to volunteer, help with various things, see some incredible films, but more importantly to meet some incredibly creative, talented, and hard-working humans. It was such a delight hanging out with Maggie VandenBerghe, Brian L Tan, Laura Loci, Bella O’Toole, Branscombe Richmond, Sara Naby Kim, Christina Stetson and more that I’m sure I’m spacing on (even Sean Crowne & Ashley Campbell made an appearance) 🌺
Thanks to Ryan Lewis for hosting the Filmmaker Lounge over at Space & Light and The Palace Theater for hosting the event! It was the perfect venue. And of course, it was a delight working with Zoë Eisenberg & Phil Payson — they organized a miraculous film festival in the face of a hurricane, and I think it’s a sign of what’s to come ♥️
This Island is new. Although we forget again & again, it does not change the fact that this island is new. Birthed from Lava coming up from the middle of the Pacific plate, it created a mountain, a seamount, until it finally burst above the waves. In our short mortal lives, it can seem ancient. But it’s only been here for less than a million years, a blink of an eye in geologic time. This Island is new.
And she’s still growing. Respect the island, honor her, and she’ll respect you. ♥️ #LuckyWeLiveHawaii
Looking down Leilani Avenue to the #RiverofLava that was flowing from Fissure 8 — coincidentally flowing 8 miles until it reached the sea. You can see the orange river in the distance… (This is the closest I could legally get!)
I took this photo a few weeks ago, but there have been no summit collapse events since August 2 and the advance of lava has stalled. Praying that it stays chill 🙏 #LuckyWeLiveHawaii
