As I’ve said before, if I’d never visited Hawaii, my 2nd book would not be what it is. Living on that island for over 10,000 hours changed me forever, exposing me to so many places bursting with music and life.

Seaview lawn is one of those places. Three days before I set off to explore Maui, I headed up to Seaview Lawn one last time where I found people slacklining! Some people are so good, they can even jump right onto it! (You’ll see.) People even do yoga on a slackline!

There are places on the Big Island that feel less like destinations and more like places of initiation.

Kehena Beach is one of them.

Tucked along the jungle-lined cliffs of Puna, this black sand beach has long been a gathering place for people living a little closer to the edge, in more ways than one.

The energy here is raw, unfiltered, and beautiful in a way that doesn’t try to impress you.

Watch closely around the 14-second mark — someone hurls themself off the jagged lava rocks into the ocean below. It’s a little insane. 😂

And yes, there’s some nudity in this video. Kehena has always been clothing-optional.

While on assignment on the southern part of the island, I noticed a sign that said “CAUTION: Beware of Falling Coconuts and Fronds.”

At first I thought it might be exaggerating the danger, but after more research, I learned just how dangerous falling coconuts can be. According to the Journal of Trauma-Injury Infection & Critical Care, a few people have even died from falling coconuts (although it’s quite rare). Pretty wild.

Welcome back!

As we make our way through my Big Island video journal, we reach another extreme place: Manuka Pit Crater.

Nestled deep within Manuka State Park, the crater formed when lava retreated from underneath the park. Be sure to check out the trees that cling to the edge. They’ve been growing on that precarious edge for years. And how beautiful it was at sunset!
