Makalawena (or Maks as the locals call it) is the most stunning whitesand beach I saw on Hawaii, and possibly the most famous on all of the Big Island.
On our 2nd visit, we were fortunate enough to camp there for a night, but in the morning, the wind threatened to blow our entire tent away!

Have you ever experienced a hurricane?
I have. (Or at the very least, a hurricane that was downgraded to a tropical storm just moments after landfall.)
It was on a fateful night, a Thursday if I remember correctly, when I was living in south Puna on the Big Island. In this edited sequence of videos, I show how Puna grew more and more chaotic the closer it got, until it finally hit just after 8PM Hawaii time.
Later, I learned that Hurricane Iselle made was the strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall on the Big Island of Hawaii in recorded history, downing tens of thousands of invasive Albizia trees along Pohoiki Road and all around the island.

The cozy town of Na’alehu is basically the home of the southernmost EVERYTHING in the USA (including southernmost grocery store). But my favorite is the Punalu’u Bake Shop, filled with the delicious smells of fresh pastries.
On one beautiful summer day, we visited this lovely bakery, and I was happy to see that they even have a great water feature with a birdbath.

Our Hawaii video series continues today with a stunning view of the northernmost point on the Big Island!
Few people ever make it up there, but for those who do, a windswept, haunting landscape awaits them. Filled with wild terrain and plenty of little nooks to explore, Upolu Point takes patience to get to, but it’s definitely worth it. (This was just one of the many remarkable places that helped inspire The Island on the Edge of Forever, and I’m so glad I went.)
