What is this Bizarre Structure? (Pololū Valley, Kohala, Big Island Hawaii video)

Nestled within the Kohala zone of the Big Island, I found Pololū Valley to be a stunning emerald gem. But today’s video is not about the wildlife.

Today’s video is about a bizarre structure I found near the beach, held together by thin rope. Was this a shelter at some point? Some punatic’s abandoned construction project? Or something else?

If you have any idea, please let me know in the comments below. And enjoy!

Hurricane Iselle Destruction BEFORE & AFTER (Pahoa, Big Island, Hawaii video)

In life, so much of what we see is temporary.

In fact, all of it is.

Today’s Big Island video highlights that in a dramatic way: a stunning before & after video showing what Hurricane Iselle did to part of the island in August 2014, just a month before I left.

When it hit, Hurricane Iselle was the strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall on the Big Island of Hawaii in recorded history, doing millions of dollars in damage including downing tens of thousands of invasive Albizia trees along Pohoiki Road where I lived.

Once the roads were cleared a couple weeks later, I shot a video of the decimation the hurricane had caused. And by a stroke of luck, I had ALSO shot a video of that beautiful drive (while hitchhiking) just 4 weeks before the hurricane arrived.

With a before AND an after video, I knew I had to splice them together, giving you a real feeling for the damage.

And then I added a bit of melodic metal to complete the ensemble. Let me know what you think, and I’ll give you a surprise.

Thanks

Much aloha and thanks goes to my friend Tom for letting me use the instrumental version of his song “Deep Black Lake” for this video. His band rocks, and you should totally check it out.

Independence Day Fireworks @ Hilo Bay, Big Island Hawaii video

People celebrate Christmas in July, right? Why not a bit of the 4th of July around Christmas?

It’s just working out this way today, as I just edited the next video in my Hawaii video queue which happens to be a hot minute of Hawaii fireworks!

A friend and I headed down to a spot in front of the Hilo Bay to watch the fireworks, and as I watch it now, I love the combination of sounds in this video. Who knew the sound of the ocean waves complemented fireworks so well?

Enjoy! (Homestar Runner & Strong Bad impersonations included free of charge.)
